Osito Story for My Mom

Each night for years, at the end of our phone calls, my mom would ask about Osito, and then I’d tell her the day’s new little story. Osito stories were like her bedtime tales, and after I was done, she’d giggle and sigh. Then we’d say I love you and trade Goodnights and Sweet dreams.

In honor of my beautiful mom, gone two years today, here’s a wee story to keep ushering in her sweetest dreams. This flash piece is included in Boudin’s new issue, which is pet-themed and benefits animal shelters. It’s a wonderful issue and you should definitely check it out. I’m thankful to Vallie Lynn Watson and the rest of the Boudin staff for their work on this lively collection.

So, now you can imagine my mom’s lilting, faintly Scottish voice on the phone, asking in a cute, tired way, like her cheek is squished on the pillow, “And how is Osito doing today?”

I’m gathering other Osito stories for her, but here is today’s flash. It’s called “Howling at Osito.”

After you’re done reading, you can imagine my mom’s giggle and “I love you” and “Sweet dreams.”

Goodnight.

New Publication Synchronicity

The timing worked out just the way it was meant to. My flash essay, “Playing with the Wizard,” came out today in Boudin, on the fourth anniversary of Matti Greenman’s official date of passing. I hope you enjoy this view into one little part of Matti’s magic.

Many thanks to Vallie Lynn Watson for her wonderful support of my work and for weaving together each of these lovely pieces for Boudin’s hybrid issue.

“He was always the hero, helping return the world to balance and magic, though sometimes he was a Viking, or a medieval wizard, or a Cyclops monster, or a rock-star spaceman saving the galaxy through the power of love and music.”

Wishing you good stories.

New Flash Essay 🐯💕

And it’s got bobcats! 🌈🐯🏡🌳

I’m excited to share my flash essay, “Home Is a Shape-Shifter,” featured in Creation Magazine’s new “Homesick” issue.
Years ago, I lived in Eldorado and fell in love with a bobcat mama. I wrote this piece soon after I left her, and it speaks about an important part of my heart.
I love Creation Magazine’s theme for this issue, and I’m looking forward to diving into the other writers’ work.
I hope you check it out and enjoy!
